Claudia Almeida

Claudia Almeida is an Architect and Town Planner graduated by the University of São Paulo, Brazil. She owns a Master degree in Infrastructure Planning by the University of Stuttgart, Germany,and a Doctor degree in Remote Sensing by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Part of her PhD Programme was accomplished at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis of the University College London, UK. Since 2004, she works as a Researcher at the Division for Remote Sensing of INPE, where she is also a Professor in the Graduate Programme in Remote Sensing. She has as well been working as invited professor in several graduate programmes in Geomatics, Geography and Environmental Modelling of federal universities in Brazil. Her professional interests concern urban remote sensing, geocomputation, spatial dynamic modeling, urban data fusion, and object-based image analysis of high spatial resolution sensors images.

Recent Achievements in Urban Remote Sensing in Brazil & South America

ABSTRACT: This lecture will provide an overview on recent achievements in urban remote sensing accomplished by researchers, practitioners, and graduate students coming from Brazil and other South American countries. Some of the topics covered will deal with the usage of high spatial resolution sensors and object-based image analysis, hyperspectral sensors, and LIDAR data for urban studies like 3D city modeling, population estimates, and life quality and socioeconomic indicators assessment. The use of high spatial resolution images associated with census data for investigating the urban inhabitants socioeconomic status will be as well approached, such as socio-spatial segregation, social inclusion and exclusion, and alike themes. Topics related to the processing of digital images to better identify urban targets will be handled, in which new techniques for refining segmentation boundaries upon-basis of classification-based template matching among others will be presented. And finally, the use of remote sensing techniques in broader fields related to the urban environment will be introduced, such as global environmental change, natural disasters and civil defense; public health; urban sprawl and regional mobility; and simulation and predictions of urban growth based on remote sensing data and modeling platforms.

Gora Mboup

Dr. Gora Mboup joined UN-HABITAT in 2004 to coordinate the agency Urban Indicators Programme. In 2008, he was promoted Chief of the Global Urban Observatory, the section in charge of the Global Monitoring of the Habitat Agenda and the Millennium Development Goals.
With a Ph.D. in Demography, Dr. Mboup has more than 15 years of experience in the field of Monitoring and Research. Before joining UN-HABITAT, he coordinated for over 10 years the Worldwide Demographic and Health Surveys Programme funded by USAID and implemented by ORC Macro (USA) in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
In 1999, Dr. Mboup was honored by ORC Macro with the Programme Manager Award for “Distinguished Team Leadership and Exemplary Performance”.

Wang Ping (1953 - ), male, Director General of China Aero Geophysical Survey and Remote Sensing Centre for Land and Resources, PhD supervisor of China University of GeoSciences (Beijing), team leader of a key project of the National High Technology Research and Development Program (“863” Program) of China, Vice president of Chinese Geophysical Society, Vice president of China Association of Remote Sensing Application, President of Sub-Association of Land and Resources of China Association of Remote Sensing Application, has been working on the research and management of aero geophysical survey and remote sensing technology for a long time and has published more than 30 papers and 2 monographs.

The Main Achievements and Prospects of Urban Remote Sensing in China

ABSTRACT: Started in 1970s, China's remote sensing technology has advanced by leaps and bounds along with the rapid development of remote sensing technology all over the world. China now has formed an all-weather, multi-scale and world-class earth observation system. As remote sensing technology could fast and accurately obtain the information about the development and construction of cities, it is now widely used in city development. With more and more new types of remote sensors coming out, China’s urban remote sensing technology has made considerable progress in recent years, and provided plenty of basic information and data of the rapid-developing cities.
Since 1980s, China started to use air-borne and space remote sensing technologies to conduct urban integrated survey and monitoring in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin etc., for the collection of information about land use, environment assessment and protection, urban free plant, urban traffic, urban ecology and disaster etc. during the development of cities. The change characteristics and rules are also investigated to provide support to the decision making for the city planning, construction and management.
Facing rapid urbanization and population growth, the issues of urban resources, environment, traffic and management in China nowadays are becoming increasingly severe. With more new types of remote sensors coming out and their further applications, remote sensing technology will have broad prospects in the field of urban planning, construction and management for sustainable development of cities. This lecture describes the rapid-developing remote sensing technology in China and the achievements of its applications in urban area, as well as the broad prospects of its applications in urban issues.
